Credentialing in DBT

The Australian DBT Institute and its international partners have been credentialing DBT Practitioners since 2008!

The Australian DBT Institute provides a range of professional development opportunities for Mental Health Professionals seeking to become proficient in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy informed approaches. Our team is led by experienced DBT clinicians who have received training, mentoring, and development from Marsha Linehan and her team at Behavioral Tech LLC. The Australian DBT Institute does not claim to have any affiliation with Behavioral Tech LLC. nor DBT®-Linehan Board of Certification.

Credentialing is the process of establishing the qualifications of licensed professionals, organisational members or organisations, and assessing their background and legitimacy. Many health care institutions and provider networks conduct their own credentialing, generally through a credentialing specialist or electronic service, with review by a credentialing committee. The Australian DBT Institute works in collaboration with other international organisations as a founding member of the International Practitioner Credentialing Committee in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. The credentialing committee meets quarterly and discusses each applicant seeking to be credentialed. A clinician will be deemed to be credentialed once they are able to demonstrate the credentials as a competent DBT therapist having met the criteria listed in the dot points below.

Credentialing with the Australian DBT Institute, through the International Practitioner Credentialing Committee in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, includes granting and reviewing specific clinical competencies, and provides successful applicants with a range of resources and supports to ensure ongoing development to enhance proficiency in the delivery of DBT informed services.

To become credentialed in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), clinicians must demonstrate that they:

  • Are members of an incorporated association of a helping profession eg. Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Nursing, Psychotherapy, Counselling
  • Completed a recognised specialist post registration course in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) such as the Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training (4 Day intensive or 12 month comprehensive) or equivalent
  • Have 200 hours of person-to-person psychotherapy/counselling experience and 50 hours of supervision relating to a minimum of 200 hours of client contact. Applicants may be asked to complete a Statement of Practice & Supervision
  • Have acquired minimum continuing professional development points for education and practice, as stated in the applicant’s incorporated society, as well as a Statement of Continuing Professional Development (this criteria is met by participants of Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training 12 month program)
  • Have completed a Personal Statement of Practice outlining the theoretical perspective, experiences, self-awareness, knowledge & understanding and reasons for their interest in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) (not required for participants of Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training 12 month program)
  • Are supported by two professional referees (not required for participants of Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training 12 month program)
  • Have undergone the appropriate screening for their employment which may include: Police Check, Working with Children Check, and no disciplinary action on Professional Registration (a declaration that these professional and mandated practices have been undertaken will be required)

If you are a therapist and you have recently completed an Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training 12 month program please make an application to become credentialed as a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) informed clinician by completing our Credentialing at https://us10.list-manage.com/survey?u=c21102efaab425d5482b3bbf6&id=bb0e5855b4!

All completed forms are emailed to the credentialing committee and discussed at the quarterly credentialing committee meeting with the International Practitioner Credentialing Committee in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy..

NO CHARGE FOR INITIAL CREDENTIALING FOR COMPREHENSIVE TRAINED CLINICIANS! Clinicians are credentialed, initially, for 18 months. Should a clinician choose to continue to be acknowledged as a credentialed mental health professional in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy informed practice then the completion of a brief practice-based questionnaire and acknowledgment is required to maintain the status as a credentialed Dialectical Behaviour Therapy informed clinician.

If you have not completed an Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training and believe you meet the above criteria you may also apply to become credentialed in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) with the Australian DBT Institute by completing the application below.

The cost of Credentialing (for applicants who have not completed an Australian DBT Institute Comprehensive Training) is as follows:

  • Registration/Administration $300 (one-time fee)
  • Reading/evaluating papers will be charged at the rate of $10 per each page per draft, as outlined above (e.g. $200 for 20 pages). It is up to each individual to cover all pertinent material in a concise manner.
