This workshop explores DBT offering a skills-based non‐judgemental approach to the management of individuals with Emotion Regulation difficulties, Borderline Personality Disorder and clients who are self-harming. In particular key concepts of Core Mindfulness as an acceptance-based module; teaching clients how to live with reality “as it is” will be explored. Emotion Regulation is also offered as a change‐oriented module, teaching clients how to alter themselves or their environments. Distress Tolerance as an acceptance-based module; teaching clients how to live with reality “as it is” will be explored. Interpersonal Effectiveness as a change‐oriented module, teaching clients how to alter themselves or their environments will also be addressed.
During the Essentials in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) workshop, participants can expect to develop a level of knowledge where they will have an overall understanding of DBT, management of emotion dysregulation, and be able to observe the key principles of DBT. Participants will also be expected to gain an understanding of the standard content and processes of DBT.
WORKSHOP LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Introducing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to clients.
- Explaining the biosocial theory behind DBT.
- Teaching the middle path skills of dialectics, behavioural change, and validation.
- Structure treatment according to the level of severity and prioritise treatment targets.
- Orientating to emotion dysregulation.
- Enhance motivation and commitment to treatment goals.
- Coach clients through obstacles that arise during treatment.
- Explore the structure of both a DBT and DBT informed approach.
- Understanding of the role of commitment, skills group, individual therapy, phone coaching and consultation team.
- Overview of DBT Skills Training (Structure, Homework and Facilitation of Skills)
- Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills components of DBT
Our facilitators have extensive experience in running DBT and DBT-informed programs and will facilitate this workshop in a lecture-style with some interactive discussions to ensure knowledge of practice-based implementations of DBT.
SKILLS EXPLORED IN THIS WORKSHOP
- Mindfulness Meditation Skills. These skills center on learning to observe, describe and participate in all experiences (including thoughts, sensations, emotions, and things happening externally in the environment) without judging these experiences as “good” or “bad.” These are considered “core” skills that are necessary in order to implement the other DBT skills successfully.
- Emotion Regulation Skills. In this module, patients learn to identify and manage emotional reactions.
- Interpersonal effectiveness skills: Learn effective strategies for asking for what one needs, saying no, and coping with conflict. Learn how to assist your clients in analysing a situation and determining goals for interpersonal effectiveness.
- Distress tolerance skills: The ability to tolerate and accept distress is essential. Learn how to teach clients to perceive their own environment without putting demands on it to be different. Learn how to teach clients to experience their own emotional state without attempting to change it, and to observe their own thoughts and action patterns without attempting to stop or control them.
DBT STRATEGIES EXPLORED IN THIS WORKSHOP
- Stylistic strategies: How to reframe suicidal and other behaviours as part of the client’s learned ‘problem-solving’ repertoire. Participants will learn to balance active problem-solving with validating the client’s current emotional state and behavioural responses. This session will teach you to blend a ‘matter‐of‐fact’, irreverent attitude towards current and previous dysfunctional behaviours with warmth, flexibility and responsiveness- ness to the client.
- Attention to contingencies: Ways to influence behaviour. BPD individuals actively avoid threatening situations. This session will assist participants to expose the client in session and in vivo to fear-eliciting stimuli.
- Validation: This session will be an in‐depth practice of validating the client’s thoughts feelings and actions. Participants will learn to search for the grain of wisdom or truth in each client’s response and know how to communicate that to the client. The emphasis here is on building and maintaining a positive, interpersonal, collaborative relationship between client and the therapist
- Format and organisation of sessions: Learn how to structure an Individual session and stay on task. Learn how to use diary cards to maximise the success of a session. Participants will learn to manage issues that come up in session in a timely manner and how to conduct a chain analysis of problem behaviours.
